Spring Trip

In 2008 we took our annual spring trip to Silver Creek Sport Horses in Broken Arrow, Okla.
Silver Creek is a full care training, boarding, and breeding facility that raises Holsteiners and Oldenbergs for jumping and dressage.
Our trip was on Saturday, March 1, 2008. The Silver Creek facilities were impressive and our tour guide, barn manager Barbara Sikkink, was very informative. The members had a greaty time petting the broodmares and watching one of the Warmblood stallions gallop around his pasture.
As Barbara explained, all Warmbloods are divided according to the German province from which they come. Each province (ie Hamburg, Holstein, Oldenburg) has its own bloodline and registry. Every mare bred to a Warmblood stallion must be approved and accepted into the registry before breeding. Each stud must pass a series of performance tests (including in-hand, at liberty, free jumps, and ridden) from the time they are weanlings until 6 years old, when they are officially approved for the registry.
The Warmbloods at Silver Creek are bred primarily to be show jumpers. In competition, these horses will clear 5 to 6 foot tall jumps, sometimes higher!

State 4-H Horse Communication Day
Oklahoma State University Animal Science Department and the OSU Cooperative Extension held its first ever State 4-H Horse Communcation Day on April 19th, 2008 in the Animal Science Building. 4-Hers across Oklahoma competed in quiz bowl, speeches, illustrated presentations, and other events.
The Horseman's Association helped set up and mediate the contests. The day was a success, and we are hoping for a larger turnout next year.
State 4-H Horse Judging Contest
The 2008 State 4-H Horse Judging Contest was held on April 12 at the OSU Animal Science Arena.
The Horseman's Assoc. helps to coordinate this event every year. We run a concession stand, hold horses for judging and aid Dr. Freeman and Dr. Cooper in their presentations.
This is one of the best ways OSU can give back to the community and young 4-Hers across the state, and Horsemans is proud to be part of it.
Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association Spring Show
The 2008 OQHA Spring Show was held March 25-29 at the Oklahoma City State Fair Park.
Thank you to everyone who helped out with this show. We had some long days but the show was a great success with 400 more entries than last year.
Joe Sibert Reining Training Workshop
The Horsemans Association sponsored a reining demonstration presented by Joe Sibert.
The demo was held on Wednesday March 12th at 7pm at the Animal Science Arena.
